28 December 2011

Only five more months
And then I can walk away
From a life of work.

15 December 2011

My legs ache tonight;
Just walking across the room
Seems too difficult.

15 December 2011

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

14 December 2011

Outside, in the field,
The grass is yellow, green, brown.
The winter rain falls.

14 December 2011

Sunday, December 11, 2011

11 December 2011

Just past full, the moon
Floating in the southern sky
Outside my window.
11 December 2011

Wednesday, December 7, 2011

7 December 2011

Clouds part overhead.
Three-quarter moon between them.
Winds shift, sky closes.

7 December 2011

Monday, December 5, 2011

6 December 2011

Midnight, and, outside,
Winter wind moving bare trees,
Moon drifting above.

6 December 2011

Monday, November 28, 2011

28 November 2011

Winter drawing close.
Skies darken, days grow shorter.
Today--snow falling.

29 November 2011

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

22 November 2011

Grey skies, constant rain.
Typical November day--
Dark, wet, bitter cold.

22 November 2011

Sunday, November 20, 2011

21 November 2011

A grey day.  Black trees,
Against a grey sky, shiver
In the constant wind.
21 November 2011

Saturday, November 19, 2011

20 November 2011

Gusts of wind so strong
I can barely open the door.
And then the air calms.
20 November 2011

19 November 2011

On a moon-lit path,
Near midnight, I walk alone
Around our small lake.
19 November 2011

18 November 2011

Lying in my bed,
The half-moon shining on me,
Drifting off to sleep.
18 November 2011

Thursday, October 27, 2011

27 October 2011

Outside my window,
The leaves change color, from green

To red, orange, brown.
27 October 2011

Saturday, October 8, 2011

8 October 2011

Windows open wide,
Listening to leaves moving
In the warm breezes.

1 October 2011 (J)

Turning the lights out,
Walking, at last, through dark rooms,

At last, to my bed.
1 October 2011

1 October 2011 (I)

Asked on a pop-psych
Quiz:  "What's your favorite day?"
My answer:  "Today."

1 October 2011

1 October 2011 (H)

I should sleep now, but
The silence keeps me awake
Late into the night.

1 October 2011

1 October 2011(G)

Too tired to sleep?
No.  Too lonely, too lonely
Without your presence.

1 October 2011

1 October 2011 (F)

Earlier tonight,
As I read, my eyes fell shut,
Sleeping then, not now.

1 October 2011

1 October 2011 (E)

Freshly-painted walls
For autumn.  The new colors
Often surprise me.

1 October 2011

1 October 2011 (D)

When I cannot sleep,
I open my window, and
Fall's breezes soothe me.

1 October 2011

1 October 2011 (C)

A dog, or perhaps
Coyote, howls, a lonely,
Distant reminder.

1 October 2011

1 October 2011 (B)

A sliver of moon
Hangs in the sky, hidden, then
Revealed by the clouds.

1 October 2011

1 October 2011 (A)

Now autumn has come;
Nights grow long, the air has cooled.
Leaves swirl in the wind.

Thursday, August 25, 2011

25 August 2011

Sun rises later
Two months after the solstice.
Autumn arrives soon.

25 August 2011

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

2 August 2011

Heat hangs in the air,
Almost tangibly.  No one
Is willing to move.

Thursday, July 28, 2011

27 July 2011

A red fox trotting
Across the field, looking good
In the morning sun.
27 July 2011

Thursday, July 14, 2011

15 July 2011

Here, a young woman,
Alone, head bowed, by her bed,
Early that morning.
15 July 2011
(After reading about, and seeing,
Edward Hopper's
"Summer Interior"

14 July 2011

A dimly lit room.
Reading late into the night.
Outside, the wind howls.
14 July 2011

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

12 July 2011

It's long past midnight.
Courtyard, beneath a balcony.
They speak; we eavesdrop.
12 July 2011
(Written after watching a video of the courtyard scene in Romeo and Juliet)

Monday, July 11, 2011

11 July 2011

Sky dark as midnight...
Five minutes ago, bright sun...
And now, pouring rain.
11 July 2011

Sunday, July 10, 2011

10 July 2011

Outside, in the field,
The grass is moving slowly
In the morning wind.

10 July 2011

Saturday, July 9, 2011

9 July 2011

Waves of heat rising
From the road...Is what's ahead
Real? Or a mirage?
9 July 2011

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

28 June 2011

A day without rain.
Clear skies and gentle breezes.
And too good to last.

28 June 2011

Monday, June 27, 2011

27 June 2011

Morning dark as night,
Lightning flashes, thunder booms.
Our dog is hiding.

27 June 2011

Sunday, June 26, 2011

26 June 2011 B

The rain has ended
And the sun shines; in my yard,
A twelve-inch turtle.

26 June 2011 B

26 June 2011

Waking to thunder,
With lightning filling the sky,
Rain falling in sheets.

Friday, April 29, 2011

29 April 2011

Another weekend.
Another two days alone,
Longing for your touch.

22 April 2011

So you want to join
The Don, tilting at Giants?
I know just the place.

I wrote this more than a year ago, and have been trying to take the perfect picture ever since (there's this wind farm, either side of I-65, just north of Lafayette, Indiana...), but nothing has worked yet. So I give you, above, an unauthorized image from Picasso and, here, a link to a great cartoon at xkcd.

27 February 2011, Number 2

After the storm ends,
Water dripping from the eaves,
Keeping me awake.
27 February 2011

27 February 2011

A cold winter's night.
Thunder, lightning fill the skies,
Chasing sleep away.

27 February 2011

Saturday, February 26, 2011

26 February 2011

Sleet on my windshield,
Ice building on the highway.
Treacherous driving.

26 February 2011

Friday, February 25, 2011

25 February 2011

As a long week ends,
I sit alone in the dark,
Waiting for morning.

25 February 2011

Sunday, February 6, 2011

6 February 2011

Again, snow falling,
Making the world disappear
Behind a white veil.

6 February 2011

Saturday, February 5, 2011

4 February 2011

And on my birthday,
Walking beneath the new moon
With my love, my wife.

4 February 2011

Thursday, February 3, 2011

3 February 2011

The world is silent
Beneath two feet of new snow,
As a hawk circles.

3 February 2011

2 February 2011

All night, the wind roared,
As if the world were ending.
But, still, the dawn came.

2 February 2011

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

1 February 2011

Wind driving the snow
Across the field. Everything
Hidden from my sight.

Saturday, January 29, 2011

29 January 2011

Children in the park,
Laughing, making snow angels,
And building snowmen.
29 January 2011

Friday, January 28, 2011

28 January 2011

Unexpectedly,
A sunny, not-so-cold day
The icicles melt.

28 January 2011

Monday, January 24, 2011

24 January 2011

The icy sidewalks,
Always treacherous, are worse
After surgery.

24 January 2011
But I haven't had a problem yet.

Sunday, January 23, 2011

23 January 2011

A day of sunshine--
The snow looks almost white-hot,
The air is frozen.
23 January 2011

Thursday, January 20, 2011

20 January 2011

It’s three weeks into
The new year and I have yet
To put on my shoes.

20 January 2011

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

19 January 2011

Even in the cold
Our dog prances in the yard,
Playing in the snow.

19 January 2011

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

18 January 2011

Cold day, thin grey clouds,
The sun just a pale circle
In the western sky.

18 January 2011

Monday, January 17, 2011

17 January 2011

A twelve-inch long scar
Where they made the incision.
A lasting reminder.
17 January 2011
I'm getting this year's project started a little later than I anticipated, owing to a piece of (not exactly minor) surgery and my recovery from it. With luck, I'll be able both to find things to write about and the energy to sit at my computer and write.
